Asymptotics and special functions

Project name: Asymptotics and special functions (SpecFun)

Of research group: Dynamical Systems and Numerical Analysis

Coordinator of this project: Dr. N.M. Temme
Startdate: 1999-01-01
Enddate: 2005-12-31

In the project 'Asymptotics and Special Functions', research is focused on new uniform expansions for integrals, in particular with applications to certain special functions. A second topic is developing numerical and algebraic algorithms for several types of uniform asymptotic expansions. With A. Gil and J. Segura (Madrid) numerical software will be developed for modified Bessel functions of imaginary order and for parabolic cylinder functions. With J. Lopez (Pamplona) several papers will be written on uniform asymptotic expansions of integrals.

This project has substantially become involved in the production of the new edition of the Handbook of Mathematical Functions (also known as Abramowitz & Stegun); see http://math.nist.gov/DigitalMathLib. The new edition will become available in hard copy, as a CD-rom, and on the Internet. We participate in the Editorial Board of the project, and write several chapters.
